Services to Transition from Homelessness

We believe at any point in anyone’s life that they can become homeless…and they don’t have to stay that way.

Our service model is simple—and effective: Help people meet their basic needs as they transition from homelessness to housing. Because everyone is unique, we tailor specific services to the individual.

Basic needs are the bedrock of our work : Clothing, food, showers, food boxes, blankets, a safe and warm place to stay—provided with compassion and professionalism.

Shelter and transitional housing are tools we use to help people obtain their own housing : We offer 3 progressive housing steps.

  • Basic shelter—a chance to clean up, take care of health problems, and plan for the future. Basic shelter may last up to 6 weeks if necessary.
  • Transitional shelter—an opportunity to build skills, find work, save money, and overcome barriers to housing. Transitional shelter may last up to 4 months.
  • Supportive housing—an opportunity for people to build a rental history, get services, and get back on their feet.

The agency works for people such as “Marie,” who wrote us the following letter. She was in the most desperate circumstances when she came to us, and now her life is much better.

When I first came to TPI for services, I was homeless, dirty, depressed and addicted to crack cocaine. I was scared and had reached my all time bottom. I committed many crimes to feed my ongoing addiction and, sadly enough, I paid the price. (That's the negative.)

When I came to TPI [the last time], I was ready 100% to play an active role in changing my behavior, my thinking and my life. Your agency, with its open and caring employees, helped bring my soul alive. I am clean, sober, employed and safely housed in my own home. I have confidence now that I've dreamed of having for over 16 years. Thank you all for opening the doors to change.

And I especially give thanks to Jean's Place. You all are a true gift from God.

With sincere appreciation,

“Marie”

Our shelter and transitional housing are accompanied with services that help people overcome their barriers to housing: employment classes, mental health counseling, alcohol and drug counseling, life skills, and case managers who work with each individual to set and meet goals for obtaining housing.

Our goal, always, is housing at the first opportunity. Some individuals may need several months of shelter before they achieve housing. We may assist others into housing while they’re still on the waiting list for shelter.

We assist more than 9,000 women and men annually.
