A former resident tells how the men’s program gave him the tools he needed to

What TPI means to me is that someone in the community believes that people that are down are not necessarily out. [When I became homeless,] I asked other homeless people what can I do—they all said TPI and some other places. Out of the agencies, TPI offered the best program to help me to get a stable environment to work on my housing, ‘cause I have some issues I need to resolve. My case manager at TPI told me about HAP [The Housing Authority of Portland] and helped me sign up on their list. In time I will show HAP and TPI that they did not make a mistake, but that I am a nice person to have around.
I think [my] issues can be resolved if given the chance to get into housing. I can be successful, [and this is] a steppingstone to a better life. The people on the street regard this program as a great thing. As soon as someone is ready to commit to [sobriety], and following the rules of the program, this program [can help people] get back on their feet. For me personally, TPI and the Clark Center have been an invaluable service. Otherwise I do not know what I would have done, where I would have gone. Or who I would have asked for help to change my life. And I think that the community benefits greatly from what this agency provides, helping destitute men get back on their feet. It cuts down on crime, drug activities, etc. Pretty much all the other men I talk to say the same thing—this is a godsend.
