Christopher's Story
I experienced homelessness for seven years, and it was a journey of constant rebuilding. There were times I found stability and times I lost it, but I never stopped trying to move forward.
For Christopher, the journey is just as important as the destination. Christopher grew up in Los Angeles in a first-generation immigrant family and like many young people, he searched for a place in the world where he belonged. That journey wasn’t easy — Christopher faced homelessness and struggled with addiction in his younger years — but he used those challenges as foundation for his growth. “They taught me strength, compassion, and purpose, and they’re a big part of why I’m here today, continuing to evolve and move forward.”
Christopher experienced homelessness for nearly seven years. In pursuit of a fresh start, he was introduced to Transition Projects. Through the Resource Center, our one-of-a-kind community hub — providing access to mail service, medical support, hygiene, clothing and much more — he was able to gain ID assistance and was referred to providers to address his health concerns. “Connecting with Transition Projects showed me the power of community and taking that first step toward getting help.”
Joining residents at Doreen’s Place — a Transition Projects men’s shelter — Christopher was paired with Crystal, his Supportive Housing Case Manager. Case managers act as navigators for our participants, guiding them through the shelter and housing system, connecting them to resources, and building strategies for success. At Doreen’s Place, Christopher accessed key resources to rebuild his life including the Rent Well program — a 15-hour tenant education program designed to empower residents to be successful renters. Our programs provide life skills benefiting participants well after their shelter stay and help to disrupt the cycle of homelessness.
The community that surrounded Christopher on his journey remains his largest inspiration. “I didn’t get here alone — the support I received helped me see that change was possible, and that’s something I carry with me every day.” Christopher continues to succeed and has a wonderful and stable home with his partner and dogs and now works as a Peer Support Specialist focusing on giving back to people experiencing homelessness.
Crystal and Christopher are shining examples of the power of community and the impact that supportive shelter and housing services make. Transition Projects is committed to our mission – helping people transition from homelessness to housing – because we know the power of lifechanging programs and services we provide in our community every day. Please consider supporting Transition Projects so we can assist more people like Christopher.
