Kenneth’s Story
Kenneth was living in his car. Then he went to the VA hospital in Vancouver for an amputation and they did not want to release him back to his vehicle. They connected him with Transition Projects and Shennewa got the call.
Shennewa is a rapid rehousing case manager working mostly with veterans. She get folks re-housed FAST — in thirty days or less.
Her last participant said, “You’re like a probation officer!” because Shennewa does not want an opportunity to pass them by.
Wherever they are — on the street, in a tent, their car — Shennewa walks alongside them on their journey. It helps her build the trust that is needed to do her job well and be more compassionate and empathetic.
When Kenneth came on Shennewa's case load, she drove to the VA hospital and asked him what kind of place he was looking for, where he wanted to live. The next visit she opened her laptop and the work began — they stared searching for Kenneth's new home.
When the hospital discharged him, Kenneth joined a shared living space for a few days while he awaited approval for his home. Kenneth was so appreciative, he said, “You’re a godsend. I couldn’t have done this without you.”
Because of supporters like you, we were able to help Kenneth find a home.
In 2024, veterans made up 7% of people experiencing homelessness in the Portland metro area – down from 25% 10 years ago.
Twenty years ago, Shennewa was nearly homeless, until a friend welcomed her in. It took her eight months to recover from domestic violence, so she could get back on her feet and resume her life.
Her friend gave her a home, and the impact changed her for good. Now, when Shennewa helps other folks find their way home, she sees such pride and confidence and purpose on their faces. It’s a wonderful thing. Shennewa remembers what that fells like — it IS a WONDERFUL thing.
Help one another. It’s what we should do as human beings, and Transition Projects is honored to do that every day.
Transition Projects supports individuals who have served in the military and their families, who are experiencing homelessness or are at risk of homelessness. We help them find and keep safe, affordable housing.
