Announcing Our New CEO

The Transition Projects Board of Directors is pleased to announce that Interim Executive Director Tony Bernal has accepted the permanent role of Chief Executive Officer, effective immediately.

Tony steps into the position after 25 years of service at Transition Projects. Over that time, he was responsible for critical functions such as public funding, low-income housing development, information management and systems, and public policy.

His extensive executive experience providing services to people experiencing homelessness will help ensure Transition Projects continues as a leader in creating a just community in which everyone has access to a safe, affordable home.

Additional experience that will benefit Transition Projects moving forward include:

  • Led Transition Projects’ strategic planning process;

  • Led and developed its Equity for Leaders training;

  • Developed Clark Center Annex and Argyle Gardens, bringing 94 units of low-income housing to Portland;

  • Oversaw funding expansion for shelter programs to increase from three to eight locations, making the agency the largest shelter provider in the state of Oregon; and

  • Oversaw expansion of the agency’s veteran housing program to serve roughly 300 a year.

In a statement, Tony shared, “There is no more important issue in our community than ensuring that everyone has a place to call home. I am honored to continue my work at this tremendous organization to transition people from homelessness to housing.”

“Tony is selfless, collaborative, and puts the organization first. His institutional knowledge, stabilizing presence, and deep understanding of the challenges and opportunities we face in the community make him the best choice to lead Transition Projects’ critical work,” said Andrew Schpak, Chair of the Board of Directors.
